ART & DESIGN | cut/improve/paste: Dan Whitford of Cut Copy

As a person that loves both music and art, I get a little bit excited when I realise that the same people that make music also make their own artwork for their albums. One of them is Dan Whitford, from one of my favourite electronic bands, Cut Copy.

Dan studied graphic design while in college and co-founded Alter, a graphic design company. This has been complementary with his musical endeavours at Cut Copy, for which he designs and produces the artwork for all their releases.

Vinyl gatefold for "In Ghost Colours", a 2008 release (and my favourite!)

Of course, how could we forget Zonoscope? Released in 2011, this baby won the ARIA (Australia Recording Industry Association) award for Best Album Cover.

The front cover features photomontage artist Tsunehisa Kimura's work, depicting New York city being engulfed in a waterfall, representing the creation of the new from the old.

The other artwork aspects of the album and singles were montages and illustrations from Dan and Alter.

"Where I'm Going" Single
Just look at that etching on the vinyl!

"Sun God" Single
I bet that's gold foil-finish print...it would be so glorious, especially for a song that's 15 minutes long (!)

The back of the album is as amazing as the front; the growing trees and plants around the car suggest a merging of the old and new, something Cut Copy did on this album.
It's always a little special when a musician designs for the music they put out themselves; I think they are really able to present what their music sounds like visually as they are familiar with the background of their sonic material. For us, it's a treat both for the eyes as well as the ears!
Till next time,
Yolande
